The Devil’s Corner Tasmania Chardonnay 2023 is a wine I found selling for $16.99 at a local wine shop. The grapes were farmed in vineyards in the Tamar Valley of Tasmania.

The Story

Devil's Corner Tasmania Chardonnay 2023

Tasmania is an Australian state located south of Melbourne, an island in its own right. The Tamar Valley is a river valley and one of the world’s coolest growing regions.

Devil’s Corner is a brand from the Brown Brothers that offers several wine brands, including Innocent Bystander, which is a well-regarded line of wines.

The Devil’s Corner Tasmania Chardonnay 2023 is sourced from Estate vineyards in the Tamar Valley (85%) and also the east coast of Tasmania (15%). It is 100% Chardonnay and was fermented in stainless steel vats. It was then aged for 3 months in French oak barrels and also underwent malolactic fermentation, which changes the natural tart acidity to more rounded acidity. Malolactic fermentation and barrel aging go well together.

The alcohol content is 12.5%, which is indicative of the cool climate.

The name, Devil’s Corner, comes from a treacherous bend in the Tamar River and not the Tasmanian Devil.

The Devil’s Corner Tasmania Chardonnay 2023 Tasting Notes

The color is a pale golden yellow. The nose is melon, lemon, pear, apple, and some tropical fruit, while being lightly floral. The Devil’s Corner Tasmania Chardonnay 2023 is smooth, sleek, and full of flavor.

This Chardonnay tastes like coconut milk, apple, lemon curd, pear, and guava, followed by nectarine, faint orange zest, and mild spice.

The acidity is well-balanced and allows the flavors to fully unfold.
