The Bogle Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 is sourced from various vineyards in California. Bogle Vineyards, from the Clarksburg AVA, have 1,600 acres of vineyards in California. The Bogle family has been farming in California since the mid-1800s. They started their wine operation in the late 1970s.

The Clarksburg AVA is in the river delta from the San Pablo Bay east of Oakland. Clarksburg is east of Napa and north of Lodi. Traditionally most of the grapes grown in Clarksburg have been sold to wineries in other California AVAs. Bogle Vineyards is working to change that and in 2020 Wine Enthusiast named Bogle Winery of the Year.

The Bogle Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 enjoyed a long growing season with warm days and cool nights. The more extended and more complete the growing season the more complex the grapes. This Cabernet Sauvignon was aged for one year in second-use American oak barrels.

American oak is a different species of oak than the French oak varietal. The American oak has a wider grain and imparts different flavors than the French. Oak barrels can cost $1,000 each and most wines in the value-priced range do not have the budget for new oak barrels.

The inside of wine barrels are toasted by flame to char the interior wood, this is where the oak flavoring comes from. The Bogle Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 uses barrels that have been used once before, keeping costs down.

In addition, American oak with its wider wood grain can give off too much oak influence. Since the Bogle Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 uses barrels that have already been used once, the barrels have less oak to give the second or third times around. The alcohol content is 14.5%.

The Bogle Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 Tasting Notes

The color is a barely see-thru garnet red with black highlights. The nose is blackberry, cloves, butterscotch, oak spice, vanilla, mild herbs, black pepper, and a whiff of smoke. The Bogle Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 is smooth with good length and plenty of flavors.

This Cabernet Sauvignon tastes like ripe blackberry, creamy vanilla, black pepper, raspberry, a slap of exotic spice, and plum. The mid-palate offers burnt caramel, tart cranberry, and sweet blueberry. The tannins are sweet and do not bite and the acidity gives the flavors plenty of time to unfold.

The Summary

  • The Bogle Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 tastes great.
  • The technical notes say that this Cabernet Sauvignon can be cellared for many years to come. That indicates that the winemaker made this wine to last. It takes top grapes and top winemaking techniques to achieve this. All this with a wine that I bought on sale for $7.99. That is an excellent achievement.
