The Viale Antica Asolo Prosecco DOCG is an $8.99 Italian Bubbly sold at Trader Joe’s. It is an Extra Dry (a little sweet), and Asolo is a tiny top-rated Prosecco appellation.

The Story

Viale Antica Asolo Prosecco DOCG

The Prosecco region is huge, and most of the vineyards are DOC-designated. Asolo is a DOCG region with the vineyards situated around the town of Asolo.

Italy has a wine governing board, and they set rules and regulations for the growing of the grapes and wine production. IGP has fewer rules and is often sold as a value-priced wine.

DOC is the standard set of rules, and DOCG is a higher standard; the G stands for guaranteed; they actually check the wineries to see if standards are being met.

It isn’t a guarantee that you will like the wine, but a guarantee of quality.

The main grape of Prosecco is the Glera grape; it is seldom used for still wines, but finds its place in Sparkling wine.

This is an Extra Dry wine, which means this Bubbly has a little more sugar content. In Sparkling wine, a little sweetness is typically canceled by the acidity of the bubbly.

The wine may seem to have more rounded fruit and citrus flavors than sweet flavors.

The alcohol content is 11%.

The Viale Antica Asolo Prosecco DOCG Tasting Notes

The color is more silver than gold. The nose is peach and pear, a little citrus, a hint of spice, with a floral edge. The Viale Antica Asolo Prosecco DOCG has good flavor and balance.

This Prosecco tastes like grapefruit, peach, slightly sweet pear, green apple, a slap of soft spice, and a late spike of tropical fruit.

The acidity does its job well and allows the flavors to fully unfold.

The Summary

  • The Viale Antica Asolo Prosecco DOCG is an excellent $8.99 Bubbly.
  • Most value-priced Prosecco is mass-produced, Asolo isn’t.
  • A terrific start to a Bellini or other Bubbly-based cocktails.
