The Story
Mount Fishtail is a family-owned winery located in the Upper Wairau Valley of the Marlborough growing region in the north of New Zealand’s South Island. The grapes for this wine were sourced from the Wairau and Waihopai Valleys.
The Mount Fishtail Sur Lie Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2024 is seperate from around 99% of the other Sauvignon Blanc wines in New Zealand.
For one, they used Sauvignon Blanc clones from Bordeaux, while the other Marlborough wineries use the Clone UCD1.
Second, this Sauvignon Blanc is aged Sur Lie or On Lees, which means the yeast that died during fermentation and whatever grape skin or pulp that evaded the screens during pressing is kept in the tank with the fermented wine.
This is a technique common in the Loire Valley with Sancerre. If the lees are stirred, it imparts a salty, nutty sensation, and if stirred enough, a creamy texture.
So while Bordeaux and the Loire Valley are Major Sauvignon Blanc growing regions, they are decidedly different from New Zealand.
The alcohol content is 13.5%.

The color is almost clear with a little silver and a hint of green. The nose is fresh and pretty, there is tropical fruit, pineapple, peach, apple, guava, coconut, melon, and a bouquet of Spring flowers. The Mount Fishtail Sur Lie Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2024 is pineapple and pink lemonade, a summer cooler.
The Sauvignon Blanc tastes like tart pineapple, lemon curd, Green Apple, peach, lime, a slap of spice, a hint of cream, and an array of tropical fruit.
The acidity is balanced and allows the flavors to fully unfold.
