The Cannonball California Sauvignon Blanc 2022 is a wine I found selling at a local wine shop for $11.99. Cannonball Wine was founded in 2016 with the mission goal of making “the best California Cabernet under $20“, they have since branched out to include Melot, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc.
The Cannonball California Sauvignon Blanc 2022 was sourced from vineyards in Eden Valley of the San Lois Obispo AVA, Arroyo Secco of Monterey County, Sonoma, and Clarksburg.
Clone #1 Sauvignon Blanc came from a vineyard in Bordeaux in 1884, a widely planted variety. Also added is a small portion of clone 27 the Musque clone. The Musque clone is a newer variety, also from Bordeaux, thought to have almost gone extinct until they were found growing in abundance in the Arroyo Secco AVA. This version is more fruit-forward less grassy and with less acidity.
This Sauv Blanc was fermented slowly at cool temperatures in stainless steel vats, it was aged “on lees’ (the dead, spent yeast was kept in the vat with the wine) for a short time, and the different lots were blended then bottles.
The winemaker chose vineyards that featured warm days and cool nights and vines that had a canopy of leaves to protect the fruit from direct sunlight. This slowed the ripening and allowed for a full growing season. The alcohol content is 12.5%.
The Cannonball California Sauvignon Blanc 2022 Tasting Notes
The color is almost clear with a gold tint. The nose is tropical fruit, peach, lemon, grapefruit, apple, spice, melon, mustard seed, and pear, with a light floral background. The Cannonball California Sauvignon Blanc 2022 has a pleasant mouthfeel and excellent flavor.
This Sauvignon Blanc tastes like a stew of dried pineapple, green apple, juicy peach, and lemon curd, followed by melon. spice, and Anjou pear. The mid-palate adds orange, nectarine, a hint of cream, and a salty/slightly nutty sensation. This is a juicy Sauvignon Blanc.
The acidity is very well-controlled, it allows the flavors to unfold but does not come on too strong.
