The Anna de Codorniu Cava Brut Rosé is a Sparkling wine I found on sale selling for $8.99. Anna de Codorniu is the oldest winery in Spain, founded in 1551. Today they are part of the Raventos family of wines. Raventos started growing grapes in 1497 and 1872 producing the first Traditional Method Cava.

Anna de Codorniu Cava Brut Rosé

The Anna de Codorniu Cava Brut Rosé is 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay which is very different from traditional Cava which is made from a blend of Macabeo, Parallada, and Xarel-lo. Those three grapes are indigenous to Catalonia, though they are related to better-known grapes. The main city in Catalonia is Barcelona, so this is Barcelona Bubbles.

Cava is produced with the same production used in Champagne, France, The Traditional Method, for more information on how Cava is made follow this link. The main difference between Champagne and Spanish Cava is the second fermentation Champagne lasts a minimum of 18 months and Cava is a minimum of 9 months, Wineries can go longer than the minimum if desired.

The longer the second fermentation (triage) the smoother the Bubbly and the bubbles are better integrated. With Champagne pressure inside the bottle is typically 6 atmospheres, while Cava is over three.

The Anna de Codorniu Cava Brut Rosé is a Bubbly that will be closer in style to Champagne than Cava with the use of the Champagne grapes. The alcohol content is 12%.

The Anna de Codorniu Cava Brut Rosé Tasting Notes

The color is amber with a hint of pink. The nose is subtle, bakery bread, cherry, grapefruit, lemon, cookie dough, and lightly floral. The Anna de Codorniu Cava Brut Rosé is crisp and fruit-forward (and citrus) with balanced acidity.

This Cava tastes like tart cherry, sour grapefruit, a slap of spice, blood orange, nectarine, lemon, and cranberry. All the flavors are balanced and the acidity allows all the flavors to fully unfold.

The Summary

  • The Anna de Codorniu Cava Brut Rosé is a tasty Bubbly that is easy to drink.
  • Everything this Bubbly does well is right out in the open.
  • It isn’t complex with loads of depth, but it does taste good.

Don’t tell anyone, but there is absolutely no correlation between the cost of wine and the quality of wine.
