The Originals Washington Syrah 2022 is a $5.99 Trader Joe’s exclusive. The Originals currently produce it from Walla Walla, Washington, a part of Precept Wine & Spirits. But this wine has a longer history.
The Story
The Originals Washington Syrah 2022 was at one time part of the Charles Smith Wines House Brand of wine. It was a successful line of wine, and its brand was sold to the Wine Group and then sold to Precept. This was originally Charles Smith’s entry-level brand.
There was a similar, slightly more upscale line of Washington wine that made wine from similar grapes and had names like Kung Fu Girl Reisling and Boom Boom Syrah. That brand was sold to Constellation Brands and later purchased by another company.
Both brands have labels of similar design, with black letters on a white background. Both wine brands are still around, and Charles Smith Wines are now the House of Smith.
The front label of the Originals Washington Syrah 2022 says that the grapes were farmed in Washington State, which is the Columbia Valley, only a small AVA is located outside the Columbia Valley.
There are no production notes for his Syrah, which is a shame since when Charles Smith produced the wine, they provided detailed notes, but that was years ago.
The alcohol content is 13.3%.
The Originals Washington Syrah 2022 Tasting Notes
The color is dark cherry red with black highlights. The nose is ripe red berries, spice, a little vanilla (they had oak influence for $5.99?), strawberry, and stone fruit. The Originals Washington Syrah 2022 is smooth and fruit-forward but not sweet.
This Syrah tastes like black cherry, a little exotic spice, plum, and black pepper. The mid-palate offers sour cherry, a salty sensation, and orange zest.
The tannins are sweet and the acidity is well-balanced.
The Summary
- The Originals Washington Syrah 2022 is a very drinkable wine selling for a very low price.
- A good wine for Taco Tuesday or one of the better frozen pizza’s.
- A very solid budget wine.
