The 2012 Magnolia Court Pinot Noir is sourced from vineyards located inside several Central Coast grape growing AVA’s. Magnolia Court is part of the Thornhill Company who own some of the best vineyards in the Central Coast AVA, though they do not say if any of those vineyards are used for the Magnolia Court. This Pinot Noir was aged “on” French oak for 9 months. Normally when a wine is aged in oak barrels they say it is aged “in” oak, so I don’t know if “on” means something different. The alcohol content is 13%.
The color is cherry fruit roll-ups. The nose is very Pinot Noir, ripe cherry, herbs and mushroom, with a little mellow plum. This is a silky, long and lean, pretty Pinot Noir. It tastes of tart cherry, sautéed mushroom, herbal tea and a taut astringent flavor. The tannins are smooth, the acidity is well-balanced and the finish is lengthy.
The Magnolia Court Central Coast Pinot Noir is a solid, enjoyable, $15 Pinot. It does all the Pinot things right, good length, balanced acidity, delicious cherry flavor with a bit of texture and the funky Pinot Noir sub-flavors. Maybe not as nuanced or complex as the best of the expensive Pinot Noir, but all in all, a very worthy bottle of wine.
