stellenryck_sauv_blancThe Stellenryck Sauvignon Blanc 2013 is sourced from sustainably farmed vineyards in the Stellenbosch region of the Western Cape of South Africa. Stellenryck is one of Die Bergkelder (The Mountain cellar), a winery/co-op founded in 1968, other labels include Two Oceans and Fleur du Cap. At one time, the Stellenryck wines were only produced in years with outstanding vintages, but since this Sauvignon Blanc is a sub $10 wine, I am not sure if that is still the practice. The alcohol content is a mild 11.5%.

The color is a very pale almost clear, but not quite, golden-yellow. The nose has those wonderful Sauv Blanc aromas of fresh citrus, fruit and flowers, bold, but beautiful. This is a crisp, clean, dry, refreshing Sauvignon Blanc, the citrus starts strong, but mellows by the time it hits the mid-palate. It starts with grapefruit, melon, Bosc pear and lime. The mid-palate adds soft peach, lemon, a brush of minerals and unsweetened pineapple. There is enough acidity to do well with the meal, but not enough to get in the way of sipping enjoyment. The finish is subtle and does linger.

The Stellenryck Sauvignon Blanc 2013 is a first class Sauv Blanc, that just happens to be reasonably priced. It is very tasty, has excellent balance and sports a bit of personality, it sells for under ten dollars and still checks off all the Sauvignon Blanc boxes. Pair it with fancy summer salads, cold fried chicken or jumbo shrimp on ice. It drinks very well and at 11.5% alcohol it is a safe pick for a week night.
