skinnygirl_sparkling_margaritaThe Skinnygirl Sparkling Margarita made with Blue Agave Silver Tequila (when you see Blue Agave on the label that indicates that it is 100% Blue Agave and not mixed with cane sugar and Silver means this is non-aged, young, natural Tequila), along with Triple Sec, flavors, sweeteners and some carbonation. The carbonation feels more like soda or seltzer than Sparkling wine. The calories are than 31.3 per each 1 1/2 ounce, so if you are counting calories, you have to do some math as you drink. The alcohol is 19.9 proof or 9.95% if you want to compare it to a glass of wine. When ordering a Sparkling Margarita at a club, they would take a Margarita and rather than pour it over ice, they would float Prosecco or another Sparkling wine over the top. But here, it is pre-mixed and ready to go, straight out of its wine-style bottle. The list price is $9.99.

The color is, well, Margarita-like, it has that cloudy silver hue, the large bubbles start out strong, and slowly fade. The nose is, again, it smells like a Margarita, it does not have the strong alcohol scent that Tequila can have, but the reserved Tequila aroma, along with the Triple Sec and lime, set the proper mood.  This is a dry Margarita, the sweetness is toned down, this is an adult cocktail, not a sorority girl red cup drink. This is a subdued, semi-elegant mixed drink, there is mellow inter-play between the Tequila, the Triple Sec and the lime upfront, with hit of sweet and sour on the finish.

The Skinnygirl Sparkling Margarita is a very solid pre-mixed cocktail. I can recall the days that any cocktail that came ready to serve was so cloyingly sweet, that they were hard to drink. I guess the lo-cal take on this Margarita solves of that problem. For me the 19.9 proof was a little light, I kept thinking that if I add a little more Tequila, a fresh squeezed lime and a couple of ice cubes (this will kill the bubbles, so think twice), it would be quite easy to go thru a bottle or two of the Skinnygirl Sparkling Margarita on a warm summer night. But, that would be defeating all the benefits of a low-calorie beverage. So, if calories are not an issue, add a little something extra and have a great summer cooler or be good and drink it as is, it tastes pretty good.

Don’t tell anyone, but there is absolutely no correlation between the cost of wine and the quality of wine.
