Gris Gris Gumbo Ya Ya-Underwood Oregon Pinot Gris 2023

Hey welcome. Uh Domain Dave here again for CheapWinefighter.com. We have another wine today, a value price wine, kind of a nice one. It's the uh Underwood Oregon Pinot Gris 2023. Um I think I found it for about $12.99, $13. Underwood is from the Union Wine Company. They have a bunch of brands, they specialize in Oregon wines. And this one will actually um they'll have Willamette Valley, which is like the premier AVA in Oregon, but they'll also have uh Rogue Valley, Numpakwa, and other grapes. And while it actually brings in different flavors of Oregon, it keeps the price down too. And then they have you know, they have all other kinds of wines, but it's kind of cool. So what we have here, oh, another thing about Underwood is they have a whole line of canned wines, including sparkling wines, which is kind of interesting because it's a little bit well in Chicago, we're kind of getting away from outdoor parties, but not really. But you know, you have a big tub with ice, and you put beer in there, you put soft drinks in there, but you can also put cans of wine in there, and Underwood will have has them for you at a decent price. So, um Pinot Gris, Pinot Gris uh is French for gray, and it's the exact same grape as Pinot Grigio, which is Italian for gray. Only difference is that it's the more French style, which is a more rounder style. Why is Oregon growing Pinot Gris as their white grape when most places that do Pinot Noir very well also have Chardonnays? They you know the it they seem to go hand in hand. And it does all throughout California, where you get a good Pinot Noir, you get a good Chardonnay. Well, it turns out way back when, when they were first kind of getting Oregon on the map, they hired someone to uh tell them what grapes to plant because grapes have clones, and not every they're like roses, single rose, double rose, bush, whatever, different colors. And with grapes, some uh grape clones grow well in this soil, on this climate, with these conditions, others do this, and they were they got bad advice, and the Pinot Noir worked like crazy that worked well. They're one of the finest uh Pinot Noir growing regions in the world, but their Chardonnay just never cut it. So while the you know they needed a white wine grape, um, and they were growing Pinot Gris. I mean, they're most AVAs grow a whole bunch of different wines, but as the Chardonnay didn't cut it, the Pinot Gris did. So they're now a Pinot Gris growing region, though they did straighten out the clone thing, and Chardonnay should be coming online before too long. I'll take a slip here. Um nice rounded, good acidity, nice flavors, smooth. Put a chill on this thing, and this thing is well, this thing's uh really good. Another thing is it's got enough bodies, 13% alcohol, which isn't a lot, but this could go with um you know, Thai food, Chinese food, fancy salads, and even it'll cut through like um pasta with white cream sauce. And then fish and all that type of thing. This is a this is the wine that if you're looking for uh uh inexpensive, this is like $13, an inexpensive pairing for a white, yeah, this this would this would do great. You know, you don't have to go to France or Italy to get those kind of wines. This will do just fine. Take another sip. Yeah, sips it sips well. Um so this is a Pinot Gris, kind of unexpected. If you're used to Pinot Grigio from um northern Italy, this isn't quite that. This that is kind of um sharper, um more acidic. This has this has solid acidity too. Uh though those the Pinot Grigios from Northern Italy are are kind of rounding out lately, too. But this is really a nice sipping wine. Um I I don't do a lot of French Pinot Gris, I just don't. Um most of the Pinot Gorillos I have I've had is from Alto Adige or just in the general area up there. There's a lot of them, and they're all pretty decent, you know. They're this is a um sort of a newer one for me, though I think we did uh review one of these vineges like seven years ago. Took another sip because it just tastes great. It's got it's got um in the on the nose. I was getting green pepper and um and those kind of things. I was going, oh, what's it gonna taste like? But it turned out it tastes like uh apples and uh peaches and pears and um lemon curd and you know it's like oh things on it, all the things that are easy to identify and things that make your palate happy. So there you go, the underwood Oregon Pinot Gris 2023. It's a nice solid bottle of uh a uh grape you might not be drinking much of and should up your intake. Uh so there you go. I grabbed one from a local shop that put the 23s on top, and I didn't notice and I didn't get a 24. These are one of those wines you want to drink new, but 23 is fine. So audio skip it cheap.
