Magus Dark Garnacha

This is a $6.99 Costco wine that seems to be a wine selling for $18 to $24 elsewhere.

Garnacha is a sleek, dark, rich wine that does not need oak aging.

Miles Davis, in 1974, released a live album from Carnegie Hall entitled Dark Magus.

Is there a connection?

What I do know is that this is no $6.99 wine; it is delicious.

Hey, Domain Dave here, cheapwinefinder.com. We got a uh Costco wine, an interesting one. It's one that's unexpected. I found it for$6.99 at Costco. Which is kind of cheap for any wine, especially a wine that came from Spain, because they gotta make it, bottle it, get it to the coast, put it on a ship, get it to our coast, and get it to Casco, and all for$6.99. Not a lot of money in there for anything to happen. It's the Magus Dark Garnaccia. It's from um a Dio, that's the different uh wine organizations, different areas. I've got links to it in the cheapwinefiner.com website. We wrote that all up so you can if you look interesting, but it's Northwest Spain by Portugal. And it's not the there's a couple of ones that are more famous than this, and so I never heard of it before. And this wine, this Maggots Dark Garnasha, seems to be non-vintage wine. There's no date on the bottle, so it's gotta be. But it's from a winery that's been around since 1943, and it's an estate wine. So they're they're not cutting costs, they're using their own grapes. So the only thing I can think of is they want this wine to be the same each and every year. And from a small, you know, not so famous uh place in Spain, that just might be how they do business. Now, here's an interesting uh part of this, which I Magus is dark. Magus is a sorcerer or a wizard. Miles Davis in 1974 put out a um live album he recorded at Carnegie Hall called Dark Magus. It's kind of a what it's Miles in his later days. This ain't the Coltrain cannibal Adderly stuff. This is this is him uh plugging into a Marshall Hamp with his trumpet. I'm gonna take a sip. So when I s when I saw the possible jazz um jazz links, I thought, oh, cool. And I listened to um that album. It's one of those things you're gonna have to listen to a few times to kind of get it. Miles was a genius. I'm not, so I'll let him I'll give him the benefit of the doubt on that one. So we've got this wine that I'm searching all over, and Wine Enthusiast magazine has um loves this wine. Guess it gives it 92 points. And it's and it says the it's just done the night the the 2022 and the 2024, but since there is no, I just think that means it's um they picked it out because it's gotta be different years coming out, even if it's not vintage, it's always a new wine. And for Google, putting a number in the title always helps. That's another story, but um other than that, and and they say the price is$18 for their bottles when they reviewed them, and I think they reviewed them in like in December of last year. The only other mentions um Holland. The Dutch love it, and it's$24 there. But did the uh I did the uh I did the conversion from the Kroners or whatever they have to dollars. So the$699 Casco wine is kind of a Casco find. Turns out it's not so weird. It's got some kind of Miles Davis possible um connection. Oh one of the major wine magazines loves it. And if you're Dutch, this is gonna be right up your alley because they love it. And actually, there's a huge um wine uh celebration every year from the Netherlands. A couple of times a year. They they they like their wine up there. When it gets cold and dark, you get you want to open up a bottle of wine sometimes. Garnache and Grenache from France are the same grape. Um Grenache is sleek and dark. It's a really nice wine. It doesn't always need to have oak. I mean, it's one of those grapes that don't really need oak, it's so sleek and dark. Adding those flavors, those oak flavors, and making it too spicy might be a little not the right way of doing it. And in the southern Rhone Valley, uh Syrah and Grenache, that's that's that is the best of blend. And it might be the second most popularly uh should be then from the Bordeaux blend, which is Cabernet and Merlot. Because uh Syrah is fat and sassy, and Grenache is sleek and dark, and the two go together. They should be dating, and they are so there you go. It's um but Grenache is a you know, sometimes it can be a little bit too dark, a little bit too tough. I mean, too much of a food wine? That's not a too much of a food wine. Because a food wine, a lot of places in Europe, they don't sip great, they don't drink. You don't want to sit around, but as soon as you have a mouthful of whatever the meal is from that area, then you take a sip of the wine, it comes, it makes perfect sense. But I'm an American, we don't do that. I just take another sip. I've been sipping on this thing all all along. It's got blueberry, it's got plum, it's got raspberry, got a little bit of spice. The fruit is not, it's not overly sweet. This is a dry one, but that fruit is really enticing. It's like, hmm, that tastes good. Uh the tannins are are sweet. This isn't doesn't have any, this doesn't have rough edges. One thing I'm worried about with uh, you know, some of these Spanish places, like I said, their food one. That rough edge is there on purpose. You take a bite of whatever local dishes and it goes away. But the local dish around here is more wine. So there you go. Uh, this is a pretty good wine for$6.99. It's it's a it's it's um it's two to three times cheaper than is everywhere else. Acostum, the Magastar Grenache, fun wine,$6.99. Give it a try. So Adios Keep It Cheap. This is Domain Dave, cheapwinefighter.com. It's uh got more wine coming up, it's starting to get warm, so we'll have some some spring wines, so I'll be talking to adios.

Don’t tell anyone, but there is absolutely no correlation between the cost of wine and the quality of wine.
