Les Hauts De Lagarde Blanc 2012

leshautsdelagardeblanc2012The 2012 Les Hauts De Lagarde Blanc is a certified organic, Vegan friendly, Estate grown blend of 60% Sauvignon Blanc and 40% Semillon grown in a vineyard near the town of Saint Laurent du Bois in Bordeaux, France. Vegans do not eat or drink food made with animal by-products.  While wine is fermented grapes and wouldn’t figure to have much to do with animal by-products, they have traditionally used egg whites or products derived from milk to “fine” the wine. “Fining” the wine removes dead yeast, protein, bacteria and grape bits and pieces from the wine, Vegan friendly wines use minerals to achieve “fining,” not animal by-products. The front label of the Les Hauts Lagarde is a very traditional illustration of the winery and vineyards, but the back label gives you everything you need to known about this White blend. The alcohol content is 12%

The color is pale golden yellow with green highlights. The nose is very floral, with orange blossom honey, citrus, apricot and violets. This is a light bodied wine, but with a substantial mouthfeel. It tastes of lemon, lime, Bosc pear, pink grapefruit and dried apricot. The mid palate brings a light touch of minerality and subdued taste of orange. The acidity is well balanced, the finish is soft, fades quickly, but does linger on.

Well, there you go, certified organic, Vegan friendly, Estate grown Bordeaux White blend that lists for $11.99, isn’t valued price wine grand? The Semillon tones down the tropical bright flavors of the Sauvignon Blanc and adds a richness that you do not usually get in Sauvignon Blanc. There is a solid balance to this Bordeaux Blanc, the fruit, citrus and acidity all find their place. This is a Bordeaux wine that is in the same price range as California or Central Coast designated California wines. I am a fan of the California wines, but Bordeaux is now a real option for value wine lovers.

Don’t tell anyone, but there is absolutely no correlation between the cost of wine and the quality of wine.
