The Lazy Bones Paso Robles Cabernet Franc 2023 is a $7.99 Trader Joe’s exclusive. It is made for Trader Joe’s by the Miller Family Wine Company, who have been producing wine for Trader Joe’s for years.
The Story
The Miller family has been making wine sold at Trader Joe’s for at least 15 years, in the early days, the wines were placed under their Central Coast Wine Warehouse division. Miller Family Wines has several of its labels and owns some of the best-regarded vineyards in the Central Coast AVA.
The Lazy Bones Paso Robles Cabernet Franc 2023 is sourced from grapes grown in the Paso Robles AVA. The Miller Family Wines own the respected French Camp vineyard in Paso Robles, but there is no indication that the grapes came from this vineyard. The back label only says the Miller family is “cellared and bottled” this Cabernet Franc which legally means they bottled the wine and aged it for a short period.
Cabernet Franc is an ancient grape varietal and is the parent of Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon. It is also the parent of Merlot and Carmenere.
There are no production notes for this wine, but the back label mentions “ripe cherries, spice blackberries, the aroma of sweet wood, nad fresh herbs.” The sweet woods suggest some sort of oak aging.
Cabernet Franc is an important blending grape in Bordeaux; it adds color, structure, and dark berry flavors. The alcohol content is 14.5%.
In the past, the label was black and white and featured stylized nude women lounging on a bed and petting a cat. The 2023 label is in color (it is very attractive) and her bare butt is no covered.
The Lazy Bones Paso Robles Cabernet Franc 2023 Tasting Notes
The color is cherry red with black highlights. The nose is dark berries, spice, light herbs, plums, and a little cola with a floral edge. The Lazy Bones Paso Robles Cabernet Franc 2023 is smooth and rich.
This Cabernet Franc tastes like blackberry, a slap of exotic spice, a little vanilla, blueberry, herbs (Cab Franc often shows green pepper, but I am not picking that up here), dried strawberry.
Cabernet Franc is known for its tannins, the Lazy Bones has tannins, but they are smooth and sweet.
The Summary
- The Lazy Bones Paso Robles Cabernet Franc 2023 is a excellent value at $7.99.
- It is very sippable and would pair well with all of the meaty comfort foods.
- It arrives just in time for outdoor patio wine sipping season.
I work at trader joes in surprise,az.
I loved this wine before and now we got it back in our store after several years.
I did a wine tasting for our customers and sold five cases of it in two and a half hours.
