LaPlaya Cabernet SauvignonThe 2012 LaPlaya Estate Series Cabernet Sauvignon is 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc sourced from grapes grown in the Colchagua Valley inside the Central Valley of Chile. The Colchagua Valley is one of the best grape growing regions in Chile and in 2005 won Wine Enthusiast’s World Wine Region of the Year award. The Estate Series is LaPlays’s value priced wine label and it should be found for under $10. This Cabernet Sauvignon was aged in stainless steel vats for 10 months, then transferred to French and American oak for 2 extra months. The alcohol content is 13.5%.

The color is a dark, vibrant black cherry red. The nose is cherry, strawberry, chocolate mint, a light touch of pepper and cinnamon spice. This is soft, rounded, jammy, though spicy on the mid palate, but still balanced Cabernet Sauvignon. It starts with plums and raspberry, followed by black pepper, vanilla and sour cherry. The mid palate brings some silky tannins, cranberry and a late hit of curry spice. The acidity is covered up by the body of the wine and the finish fades quickly, but never completely goes away.

The 2012 LaPlaya Estate Series Cabernet Sauvignon is a very solid under ten buck Cab. It does not have the structure or flavor to hang with more expensive Cabernet Sauvignon, but when you factor in the selling price it packs some bang for the buck. Remember, a Cabernet Sauvignon from Chile is probably going to be leaner and less fat and sassy than a Cab Sauv from California or Washington. As for food pairing, this is a burgers and pizza kind of wine, but is probably best suited for Tuesday nights, out on the patio, watching the sun go down.
