2011 Apothic White Winemaker’s Blend

apothic white blendNamed for the Apotheca – where then-pharmacists known as apothecaries not only dispensed tobacco and medicine but also blended and stored wine, Apothic is one of the butt-load of labels owned by the largest family-owned wine company in the world E & J Gallo. This puts the virtual winery Apothic (owning no vineyards or wineries) in company the likes of wines Mirassou, Naked Grape, Dark Horse, Dancing Bull, Ecco Domani and MacMurray Ranch as well as everyone’s favorite bum wines Night Train and “What’s the word? Thunderbird. How’s it sold? Good and cold. What’s the jive? Bird’s alive. What’s the price? Thirty twice.” That jingle for Thunderbird was written so long ago, “thirty” is referring to cents!

We reviewed the Apothic red blend a couple of months ago so wanted to check out their white blend as well (why not, right?). It’s a medium golden straw color in your glass and smells like you’re holding a bouquet of freshly-cut flowers upwind of a fresh fruit stand. Yeah, lots of fruit, floral and maybe a bit of butterscotch thrown in.

Drink it with something really spicy because a sip will have you running for your toothbrush. It is SWEET! Very sweet. Like dessert wine sweet. Don’t get me wrong, sweet wines have their place and chicks will dig it. I was just expecting more of the Chardonnay to come through – but I definitely got way more of the other two grapes blended, Riesling and Moscato. Nice flavors – reminded me of a caramel apple with a finish of honey and vanilla. Very smooth and refreshing. Did I mention sweet?
