The Field Recordings Freddo Paso Robles Sangiovese 2022 is a wine that lists $25, but I found it on sale for $16 (Binny’s). It is a blend of 79% Sangiovese, 16% Dolcetto, and 5% Valdiguié. Dolcetto is a grape from the Piedmont in Italy used to make sweet wines. Valdiguié is a grape from the Languedoc in southeast France.

The name Freddo means cold in Italian and has nothing to do with Don Corleone’s weak son in the Godfather movies.

Field Recordings is a winery from Andrew Jones, he was a vineyard manager who planned and planted vineyards in the Paso Robles and the Central Coast. He would seek out forgotten and neglected vineyards and bring them back to life. Over time vineyard owned would offer him grapes from parcels of these vineyards and he would make wine.

The Field Recordings Freddo Paso Robles Sangiovese 2022 was produced with carbonic fermentation/maceration. They placed the whole grapes in a pressurized stainless steel tank where the oxygen was removed and CO2 was added. The grapes would start to ferment from the inside out and would burst releasing the juice. Natural yeast was used for fermentation, meaning the natural yeast in the air and on the grape skins, not commercial yeast.

That process took two weeks. The wine was moved to stainless steel tanks with lees (dead yeast) for aging.

This is a Red wine that is intended to be served chilled. The white lettering on the label turns blue when the Reddo is at the right temperature. The motto is “When the label turns blue, you know what to do.” The alcohol content is 13.5%.

The Field Recordings Freddo Paso Robles Sangiovese 2022 Tasting Notes

The color is cherry jelly red. The nose is subtle, I think the cold masks much of the scents, but there are red berries, a savory note, some of the funky-cool scents you get from good Pinot Noir, and cherry hard candy. The Field Recordings Freddo Paso Robles Sangiovese 2022 is sleek and focused.

This Sangiovese tastes like strawberry, the tasting notes mentioned Jello Shooters and maybe it is the power of suggestion but I tasted Jello, and there is a harder-edged red berry, cranberry, blueberry, a light touch of herbs, and a nutty/salty sensation.

The tannins are very soft and the acidity allows the flavors to unfold and linger.

The Summary

  • The Field Recordings Freddo Paso Robles Sangiovese 2022 is not simply loads of fun, it is a really good wine.
  • I was expecting a novelty but got an extremely sippable really good wine.
  • The label says that 180 barrels were made which sounds small but is over 50,000 bottles, if you see it on the shelves buy it!

Don’t tell anyone, but there is absolutely no correlation between the cost of wine and the quality of wine.
