The Emile Cheysson Cremant De Bourgogne Brut is a Sparkling wine I found for $9.99 at a local wine shop. The average price on he internet is $17 and up. Wine sales have been down for the last years, and shops have been having sales to get folks in the door, so keep an eye on your local shops’ sales advertisements.
The Story
The Emile Cheysson winery has been in business since the 1600s, and the current owners have been in business since 1868. They are located in the Burgundy district of France and produce still wines as well as Sparkling wine.
Burgundy is the home to both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and produces some of the finest examples in the world.
Cremant is a Sparkling wine from France, produced in the Traditional or Champagne Method, but not sourced and made in Champagne. Champagne is a trademark and copyrighted name, and it only applies to wines grown and produced in the Champagne region, with a few exceptions.
This Cremant is 100% Chardonnay. The rules and regulations for producing Cremant are less stringent than those for Champagne. For example, the second fermentation in Champagne lasts a minimum of 18 months, and Cremant is only a minimum of 9 months.
While the vineyards in Champagne are world famous, the Burgundian vineyards may have even higher renown.
While the minimum second fermentation for Cremant is 9 months, I suspect the Emile Cheysson Cremant de Bourgogne Brut has details closer to those of Champagne production.
Cremant is typically a less expensive alternative to Champagne, while still exhibiting many of the same qualities as Champagne.
The alcohol content is 12.5%.
