I found the Doris & Leopold Grüner Veltliner 2023 wine at Trader Joe’s for $5.99. This wine is produced by Sutter Winery in Austria.
The Story
The Sutter Winery has been around for 100s of years, and wine has been grown and produced here (Hohenwarth, Austria) since 1150. Doris and Leopold are the proprietors of Sutter Winery. They do not show Doris & Leopold wines are their website, it’s all Sutter Wines. It looks like the Doris and Leopold brand may be for Trader Joe’s and other house brands.
The Doris & Leopold Grüner Veltliner 2023 is an inexpensive example of the White wine of Austria. 75% of all the Grüner Veltliner vines are farmed in Austria.
The Sutter vineyards are planted on limestone-rich soils in an area that receives little rain, causing the roots to grow deep in search of moisture. These are hardy vines that are used to struggling during the growing season.
You can identify Austrian wines from the red top of the screw cap with a white slash.
The alcohol content is 12.5%.
The Doris & Leopold Grüner Veltliner 2023 Tasting Notes
The color is clear with a touch of silver. The nose is subtle, with citrus spice, stone fruit, lime, and light floral notes. The Doris & Leopold Grüner Veltliner 2023 is both light-bodied and rich in flavor.
This Grüner Veltliner tastes like apple, grapefruit, and a soft slap of minerality, followed by tropical fruit (soft), spice, and tangerine.
The acidity is balanced and allows the flavors space to unfold.
The Summary
- The Doris & Leopold Grüner Veltliner 2023 is a solid summer sipper.
- Every time I have a Grüner Veltliner, I wonder why I don’t drink it more often; it makes for a tasty value-price wine.
- It has a very nice burst of fruit on the mid-palate.
