The Cocobon Espresso Roasted Oak Red Blend is $6.99 at Trader Joe’s. The Cocobon line of wines is a little different; they have a Red blend, a dark Red Blend, a roasted oak Red blend, and a roasted oak Chardonnay. The three Red blends use the same three grapes: Merlot, Zinfandel, and Petite Sirah, with the Dark also adding a little Petit Verdot.

The Story

Cocobon Espresso Roasted Oak Red Blend

The wine is produced by a division of Fetzer, which is a sustainably farmed and also a certified B Corporation.

The Cocobon wines available at Trader Joe’s year after year. Here is our review from July 2021.

The Cocobon Espresso Roasted Oak Red Blend is a non-vintage wine, indicating that grapes grown during separate seasons were used in production.

Non-vintage wines can taste the same with every new vintage, letting customers know they can count on this Red blend. That is a plus for a $6.99 wine.

The espresso-roasted oak flavor comes from how the oak barrel is toasted. Whisky barrels are charred, wine barrels are toasted. There are various levels of toast with each level giving particular flavors.

The species of oak matters; French oak and American oak are different species. French oak has a tighter grain, American oak has a wider grain and it will impart chocolate, vanilla, and coffee flavors depending on how the staves are cut and the barrel toast.

The alcohol level is 14%.
