The Bonanza Cabernet Sauvignon Lot 7 is a wine I found for $11.98; it usually sells for between $17 and $25. Bonanza is a brand from the Wagner Family of wines, of Caymus fame, along with many other popular brands.
The Story
The Wagner family has roots in the wine world going back to the 1880s. Chuck Wagner founded the Caymus brand 45 years ago, and today, it seems like all the children have their influential wine brand. One of the sons, Joe, founded Meiomi Pinot Noir, which he sold for a third of a billion dollars. This is a family that knows how to make wine.
While Caymus, depending on the bottling, sells for $40 on up to over $100, Bonanza is an everyday value-priced wine.
The Bonanza Cabernet Sauvignon Lot 7 is a non-vintage wine, while it seems that Lot 6 was a 2023 vintage. Another interesting thing I found is that older Lots are selling for over $50 now that they are scarce.
A quick check of the web showed the average selling price to be around $20. This wine does not look to be a Non-vintage to save money. This Cabernet seems to be very intentionally produced. The winemaker is Chuck Wagner, the founder of Caymus.
They do not offer production notes; their label says this is a California wine. The Wagner Family, after 45 years of Caymus, has friends and contacts all over California. They have ready access to good grapes.
If you have a reasonably priced California Cabernet Sauvignon made by Chuck Wagner, that should be the selling point. What the oak regiment was or what yeast was used is secondary.
The alcohol content is a reserved (by today’s standards) 13.3%.
The Bonanza Cabernet Sauvignon Lot 7 Tasting Notes
The color is a barely see-through black cherry red. The nose is dark berries, mocha, spice, and raspberry. Along with dark chocolate, light herbs, and plum. The Bonanza Cabernet Sauvignon Lot 7 is full of ripe fruit and interesting textures while still showing balance.
This Cabernet Sauvignon tastes like blackberry, licorice, spice, and strawberry. Then hints of cream, orange zest, and blueberry, with dusty chocolate powder.
The tannins are sweet and the acidity is well-balanced.
The Summary
- The Bonanza Cabernet Sauvignon Lot 7 is very easy to drink.
- The flavors are varied, giving this Cab a touch of complexity.
- The Lot 8 has been released, so look for bargains on Lot 7; it is a good wine.
