The Story

Aldi's Mark Hill Pinot Noir 2023

The 2023 vintage has a new label; the previous vintages had labels reminiscent of Mark West Pinot Noir.

The Mark West Pinot Noir (E&J Gallo) had been the best-selling Pinot Noir under $15 for over 15 years.

I do not know if the previous Mark Hill Pinots were meant to be a dupe or if it was a coincidence, but something caused the label to change.

The Mark Hill is sourced from California, which means that 2 or more major AVAs were used. With Pinot Noir, the coastal AVAs were likely chosen. The interior of California is generally too hot to grow Pinot Noir grapes.

The back label is as close as we get to production notes, and there isn’t anything there worth repeating.

The alcohol content is 13.7%.

The Aldi’s Mark Hill Pinot Noir 2023 Tasting Notes

The color is slightly see-through cherry jelly red. The nose is black cherry, herbs, dried leaves, pepper, spice, and tart cranberry. The Aldi’s Mark Hill Pinot Noir 2023 is spicy and fruit-forward.

This Pinot Noir tastes like tart cherry, pepper, spice, red hard candy cough drops, tea, and raspberry.

The acidity does its job well.

The Summary

  • The Aldi’s Mark Hill Pinot Noir 2023 is a little too spicy for my taste, but otherwise a very sippable wine.
  • If you have a cheese plate or fancy crackers, this Pinot Noir will balance out nicely.
