The Substance Ro Rosé 2023 is a wine I found at Costco selling for $9.99. Substance is a brand from the House of Smith/Charles Smith winemaker. They offer K Vintners, a high-end wine, and Vino CasaSmith, inspired by Italian wine. Sixto which explores Chardonnay, and Golden West which produces Pinot Noir from Washington State.

Substance Ro Rosé 2023

The Substance brand has a full line of wine varietals is uses the Periodic Tables of Elements as a naming device. If Mg is magnesium then it is 100% that mineral. Substance Cs is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and Substance Ch is 100% Chardonnay. They say there are 74 additives approved for wine and Substance does not use anything that is not naturally occurring in the wine.

The Substance Ro Rosé 2023 (It is a Rosé of Syrah) is not shown on the House of Smith website and does not seem to be available anywhere but Costco at the moment. That is interesting since Costco sold the K VIne Rosé 2022 which was sourced from the same vineyard and also sold for $9.99. The K Vines label was a Cosctco exclusive.

This Rosé uses grapes from the Buckshot Vineyard in the Wahluke Slope AVA, that vineyard is owned by the Milbrandt Family who have some of the best vineyards in Washington State.

Without Technical notes (House of Smith has some of the best Production notes around) I do not know if the K Vines and the Substance Ro were made with different production techniques or if they are similar. If that are similar wines that would be good since the K Vines Rosé was excellent. The alcohol content is 12%.

The Substance Ro Rosé 2023 Tasting Notes

The color is more amber than pink. The nose is bright and fresh, there are aromas of ripe juicy peach, and pear, a little honey, cherry, a bit of cream, and a pretty floral edge. The Substance Ro Rosé 2023 has a nice rounded mouthfeel and a tasty mix of flavors.

This Rosé tastes like black cherry, a little vanilla ( I am not sure where that comes from because I don’t think it is oak-aged), dried cranberry, and soft spice. The mid-palate adds pineapple, stone fruit, and ripe plum, along with a salty/nutty sensation.

The acidity is seamless it allows the flavors to unfold and gives this Rosé good length.

The Summary

  • The Substance Ro Rosé 2023 is a terrific summer sipper, put it on ice and you are good to go.
  • This may well be my Rosé of the Summer of 2024!
