2010 Frescobaldi Remole Toscana

remole_rosso_2010_spallaThe 2010 Frescobaldi Remole Toscana is a blend of 85% Sangiovese and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from several vineyards of Tuscany in Central Italy. Frescobaldi is a family owned winery that has been operating for 700 years and 30 generations. This is a Super Tuscan wine, which is Sangiovese blended with French varietal grapes. Super Tuscan wines do not conform to the rules and regulations of the Italian wine governing board, the DOC or DOCG, but when these blends proved to be hugely popular they invented the IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) designation to give these wines some stature above the lowest classification of table wine. The Remole is aged in stainless steel tanks for 5 months and then aged an additional 2 months in the bottle before release. The alcohol content is 12.5% and this should sell for $10.

The color is a dark, but see-thru ruby red. The nose is fresh strawberry, blackberry with Altoids spice along with brown sugar. This is a soft, juicy, supple wine. It starts with rich blackberry juice, Australian black licorice, sweeter cherry and tart cranberry. The mid palate shows some dusty cocoa powder and dried peach slices. The tannins are soft and the acidity is well balanced. The finish is full and long.

The Remole Toscana is the kind of wine, that if you were going to have a bottle of Red on your table at every meal, this is what that bottle would be. Very tasty and versatile, it drinks very well on its own, but it is just the thing for BBQ chicken pizza or stuffed blue cheese burgers or Thanksgiving turkey. It is an easy to get along with, friendly bottle of wine.
