The 2010 Bogle Petite Sirah is sourced from vineyards in the Clarksburg and Lodi AVA’s in Northern California. Bogle has been making wine from Petite Sirah grapes for 33 years and Bogle is the largest winery in the Clarksburg AVA. There are only a handful of wineries in Clarksburg, with the majority the grapes shipped to winemakers in other AVA’s. When you see a bottle of wine with “California” on the label instead of a single AVA, there is a pretty good chance that Clarksburg grapes were some of the grapes used. This Petite Sirah was aged in oak barrels and the alcohol content is 13.5%.
The color is a dark extracted purple with a strawberry halo. A very dark nose, blackberry, cold coffee, a little grilled meat and a new leather jacket. There is a good full mouthfeel, this is no shrinking violet wine. It starts off with blackberry and purple plum with an under current of Snickers chocolate. The mid palate brings both Christmas spice and curry spice along with orange peel and little touch of cream. You can sense the tannins, they are in the mix somewhere, but you can’t taste them. The acidity makes itself known on the finish, but the finish is still on the short side.
What’s not to like about the Bogle Petite Sirah? It is very tasty, plus it is not the same old thing, it is made by a producer that has been making Petite Sirah for the California equivalent of forever and you should be able to find it for ten bucks or less. The wine is made in a drink it now style that lends itself to being a tuesday night sipper, but it has more than enough flavor and structure to pair with steaks on the grill.
