The 2009 House Red Wine is a blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 4% Malbec, 4% Syrah and 2% Petit Verdot sourced from vineyards in the Columbia Valley in Washington State. This blend was originally put together by Charles Smith of Kung Fu Girl Riesling and Velvet Devil Merlot fame (among many other wines). This wine is intended to be a simply made, but full flavored inexpensive everyday wine. The alcohol content is 13.5%.
The color is purple with black highlights and a pink rim. The nose is blueberry and blackberry, a Christmas wreath and cigar box. There is a silky smooth mouthfeel, it tastes of black cherry and plum sprinkled with Nestle’s Quik powder. The mid palate adds a little strawberry in cream and a slight bite from the tannins. The finish is sour fruit and fades fairly quickly.
The 2009 House Red Wine is what it says it is, a tasty, inexpensive wine that you pour when eating burgers or spaghetti. Not complex or layered, but drinks nicely and has enough structure to add to the meal.
