The Villa Maria Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2021 is a “taste of Marlborough” wine sourced from vineyards in the cooler Awatere Valley and the warmer Wairau Valley. They purposely selected vineyards in diverse locations to get a selection of grapes that are indicative of the region.
This is Villa Maria’s Private Bin line of wines and is their entry-level line, they also offer single vineyard wine and organic wine. They produce a wide range of wines and go beyond the Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc that most folks associate with New Zealand.
If you are unfamiliar with New Zealand, Marlborough is located at the Northern end of the South Island. Most of the vineyards there are located along the coastline along both the east and west sides. The 2021 vintage was excellent. There were stable conditions with warm days with sunshine and cool nights.
The Villa Maria Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2021 is a young wine not intended to be cellared or aged. These types of wines receive simple production methods designed to show off the quality of the grapes. Picking vineyards from multiple locations won’t give you a sense of a single vineyard but will give you insight into the Sauvignon Blanc wine of the region. The alcohol content is 13.5%.
The Villa Maria Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2021 Tasting Notes
The color is pale wheat yellow. The nose is a burst of tropical fruit, lemon, apple, peach, pear, grapefruit, a grassy note, and lightly floral. The Villa Maria Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2021 has a medium mouth feel and bold, but balanced flavors.
This Sauvignon Blanc tastes like grapefruit, orange blossom honey, melon, lemon, lime, and tangerine. The mid-palate brings a little nectarine, a salty sensation, and dried pineapple bits. The acidity is well-balanced and this Sauv Blanc has excellent length.
