The Matias Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 is a bit of a mystery wine, their website is gone, and their trail leads to more than one place. They seem to have two vintages of this Cabernet Sauvignon, a 2019 vintage and this 2021. The 2019 was one of the best in recent years and the 2019 was good but the yields were low.

Matias is a brand from Dan Fitzgerald who has worked at several high-end wineries. The Matias brand and several brands involve grapes found at elite vineyards in California produced into European-inspired wines at an excellent price. I found this wine selling for $21.99 which is a fine price for a boutique Napa Red.

All the information I have is for the 2019 vintage, I didn’t find a mention of the 2021. This Cabernet Sauvignon had grapes sourced from a single vineyard in the Yountville AVA with a small amount of grapes coming from the Calistoga AVA. There are no production notes but they do some detail in the barrel program they used two cooperates Saury and Taransaud. These are barrelmakers who are used for only the finest wines. 60% of the barrels were new barrels with medium and medium plus yoats.

There looks to be some relationship between Dan Fitzgerald and Enos Vineyards (Sonoma), there are several labels from different high-end locations in California, all limited production wines made with high-end production methods.

The Matias Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 was created to shake up the Napa Valley wine industry, by offering high quality for a price that is attainable. The alcohol content is 13.3%

The Matias Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 Tasting Notes

The color is garnet red with black highlights. The nose is dark berries, spice, black pepper, raspberry, a hint of mocha, a little vanilla, slightly smokey, with a floral edge. The Matias Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 is smooth on the palate with excellent length and a solid array of flavors.

This Cabernet Sauvignon tastes like blackberry, licorice, a slap of spice, a little raisin, extracted blueberry, and vanilla. The mid-palate adds orange zest, tart cranberry, a salty sensation, and caramel and strawberry (not sweet).

The tannins are sweet and the acidity is excellent, this is a well-made wine.

The Summary

  • The Matias Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 is a wine well worth seeking out, your best bet may be the internet.
  • I left links to information on this wine in the body of the review, there does not seem to be a single source.
  • This is an excellent Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.
