Ferrari-Carano Bella Luce Sonoma County White 2010

The  Ferrari-Carano Bella Luce (translates to beautiful light) Sonoma County White  images is a blend of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat Canelli, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Blanc, Semillon and Muscat Giallo grown in several Ferrari-Carano vineyards in Sonoma County, California.  The individual grape varietals are fermented separately in stainless tanks and then blended to get the proper mix. This wine does not undergo malolactic fermentation, this is a winemaking process used often with Red wine and with some White (usually Chardonnay) wines. It transforms the more acidic, sharper malic acid into softer, more rounded tasting lactic acid. A simplified way of putting it when used for White wine is, no malolactic fermentation= crisp, clean, more citrus flavored wine, malolactic fermentation= softer, less acidic, fruit forward wine. The alcohol content is 13.4%

The color is pale champagne golden yellow. The nose is complex and inviting, flowers and citrus, apple and pears all in a beautiful potpourri. This is a pretty wine, not delicate, it has a bit of body to it. It tastes of grapefruit, melon, peaches and pears, lime and kiwi. The mid palate adds a light brush of minerality, just enough to apply some texture, along with creamy lemon. There is a solid dose of acidity in the Bella Luce, but it does not interfere with the flavor. The acidity allows the finish to be long and strong.

The Ferrari-Carano Bella Luce is a wine that allows you to appreciate the art of blending grapes. There is a swirling stew of flavor in a glass of the Bella Luce and yet the flavors are balanced and complementary. Serve chilled and pair with lighter seafood dishes or better yet, twist open a bottle at the Christmas cookie exchange or for a toast after last ornament is placed the Christmas tree.

Don’t tell anyone, but there is absolutely no correlation between the cost of wine and the quality of wine.
