California 37 Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

california37cabernetThe 2010 California 37 Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the band Train’s line of wines, though you would not know it by looking at the label unless you happen to know their 2012 album was named California 37. California 37 is one of Under Dog Wines many labels, which also include Cupcake, flipflop, Big House, Concannon, Mogen David, Fisheye and several other. A large portion of the proceeds from this Cabernet go to Family House a local San Francisco charity that provides housing for families who have come to San Francisco to get medical attention for a sick child. If your in the wine aisle looking for a Cabernet Sauvignon in the $10 range and you just can’t decide on which Cab to choose, maybe you should grab the one that helps sick kids and their parents. The alcohol content is either 12.6% (technical sheet) or 13% (back label).

The color is a see-thru cherry red that becomes almost clear as it reaches the rim. The nose is dark berries, a little new leather coat, some chocolate powder and clove gum. This is a tasty Cabernet, soft and smooth with muted tannins, but with some layers and depth to the flavors. It starts with ripe blackberry, black cherry, a slap of herbs and a hint of creamy vanilla. The mid palate shows fudge and tart cranberry. The tannins are hidden in the mix and the acidity does not show up until the finish and propels a muted finish along for a decent amount of time.

The California 37 Cabernet Sauvignon is an extremely solid, drink it now, $10 range Cab. It is a little light on the tannins for a traditional California Cabernet, but it is right in the pocket in the flavor department. A tasty Cabernet Sauvignon with soft tannins is the perfect accompaniment for blue cheese burgers off the Weber grill or for sipping while sitting around the fire pit on a beautiful summers evening.
