The Whispering Angel Rosé 2023 is a wine from Provence in the south of France, I found it on a Mother’s Day/Spring sale for $13, but a check on the web says it sells for $12 to $20. This is one of the many Rosé brands from Chateau D’ESCLANS in the Cotes de Provence AOC, near San Tropez.
Chateau D’ESCLANS also produces The Beach, The Pale, and Rock Angel Rosé. The Rock Angel Rosé is their top wine with the Whispering Angel ranked just below.
The grapes in this blend are Grenache, Cinsault, and Grolle (also known as Vermentino, a White grape).
The key feature of the Whispering Angel is the use of Free Run juice. Free Run is the juice that follows from the grapes when they are placed into the press. No pressure is used it is the weight of the grapes that causes the juice to flow. Free Run juice is seen as the finest quality and is preferential to pressed juice since it contains the fewest tannins and is the farthest away from the seeds and stems.
It is common for the most expensive and sought-after wines to be made exclusively from Free Run juice. The Whispering Angel also included pressed juice.
The grape juice is fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, this is a 2023 vintage wine in May 2024 so the aging process was not long, but a young, fresh Rosé does not need extended aging. The alcohol content is 13%.
This is a well-made Provence Rosé produced by the Chateau that helped jump-start the recent Rosé wine Renaissance.
The Whispering Angel Rosé 2023 Tasting Notes
The color is on the peach side of pink. The nose is ripe fruit, citrus, and cream. The Whispering Angel Rosé 2023 has a very pleasant mouthfeel and a reasonably complicated array of flavors.
This Rosé tastes like grapefruit, green apple, peach, and pear, a slap of spice, and tropical fruit. The mid-palate adds a hint of vanilla cream (there was no oak, so maybe this flavor came from stirring the lees), stone fruit, hard-edged cherry, and a salty/nutty sensation.
The acidity is well-controlled.
