The Fancy Flock Sauvignon Blanc 2020 is a 3.99 Aldi exclusive wine imported from Spain. Aldi is THE value wine destination in Europe. In the US, Trader Joe’s has the bargain wine reputation, with American Aldi’s having a much smaller wine selection.
The Fancy Flock Sauvignon Blanc 2020 is produced by Felix Solas, a family-owned winery in business for over 50 years. The grapes were sourced from several estate vineyards in the La Mancha DO of central Spain.
A DO in Spain is the same as an AOC in Franc or DOC/G in Italy. It is the defined appellation borders and also the governing body that provides rules and regulations for the farming of the grapes and the production of the wine.
While Sauvignon Blanc is not a grape that you would associate with Spain, it is one of the main White grapes from La Mancha. CWF recently reviewed Trader Joe’s $4.49 Vinas Chilenas Sauvignon Blanc from Chile.
If you think that four and four dollar and fifty cent wines are too cheap, remember that people would live where wine with lunch and dinner is the tradition drink cheap wine. Wines that sell for a few Euros are the wines of choice for most of the population.
Most of the meals are made from scratch, no pre-packaged microwave meals here. The everyday wines may be inexpensive, but folks drink the local offerings because they like it and it matches the meal. Wine marketing will lead you to believe that no wine under $20 is fit for the dinner table. But in practice, there are far more $4 wines on the table than the more expensive wines.
The Fancy Flock Sauvignon Blanc 2020 is an example of the wines the Spanish will drink with their meal. Sauvignon Blanc is a good wine to try at cheap prices, the production techniques are quick and easy, and extended aging I not necessary. Young Sauvignon Blanc wines can be very enjoyable. The alcohol content is a mild 12%.
The Fancy Flock Sauvignon Blanc 2020 Tasting Notes
The color is a wheat yellow with a slight green tint. The nose is subdued, but there is lemon, lime, green apple, peach, pear, slightly grassy, with a floral edge. The Fancy Flock Sauvignon Blanc 2020 is a food wine, it has a sleek mouth-feel, soft flavors, and a slap of acidity designed to cleanse the palate.
This Sauvignon Blanc tastes like a mix of lime and coconut water, pear, grapefruit, and melon. The mid-palate follows the main body of the wine but does add nectarine and faint orange juice. The acidity will allow this wine to work well with the meal, but does not get in the way when sipping.
The Summary
- The Fancy Flock Sauvignon Blanc 2020 is a very useable wine, it would pair well with salads, noodle dishes, and simple seafood fare.
- It is not a wine I would choose for sipping enjoyment. It tastes fine, the flavors are balanced, it is just that I like my siping Sauv Blancs with a bit more oomph.
- A four dollar wine that works with everyday meals brings value to your table.
