dehesa_de_lunaThe Bodegas Dehesa de Luna 2012 is a blend of mainly Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah with additional indigenous grapes sourced from 2 Estate vineyards (sustainably farmed) in the Castilla-LaMancha region (near Madrid), in the middle of Spain. This is classified a Vinos de la Tierra de Castilla wine, which is roughly equivalent to the Vin de Pays wines of France or the IGP wines of Italy. Bodegas Dehesa de Luna is a fairly new wine estate, the vines were planted in 2001 and the state of the art winery was completed in 2012. This blend was aged in French (80%) and American (20%) oak barrels, 25% new barrels, for 6 months. The alcohol content is 14%.

The color is black cherry red. The nose is deep and dark, mostly blackberry and plum with a hit of oak spice. This is a bright, dry, slightly sour wine. It tastes of fresh red berries, raspberry, black cherry, plum with herbs, olives, spice and a savory note. The tannins are well-integrated and there is a solid amount of acidity, this would do very well as a food wine. The finish is crisp and clean.

The Bodegas Dehesa de Luna 2012 is a very solid Red blend, just the wine to pair with roast pork, tapas small plates or BBQ. It drinks fine on its own, but the acidity and the array of flavors say this is a bottle for the dinner table. The wines of Spain offer a wide diversity of quality wines, and more often than not, at a very attractive price.

Don’t tell anyone, but there is absolutely no correlation between the cost of wine and the quality of wine.
