2010 Chateau Pesquie Terrasses Red

112002dThe 2010 Chateau Pesquie Terrasses is a blend of 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah from vineyards in the Cotes du Ventoux region of the Rhone Valley in France. The Cotes du Ventoux is where the Alps meet the Mediterranean. The wine is unfiltered and unfined, which means all the dead yeast and grape residue are left in the barrel (and may find its way into your glass), which leaves all the additional textures and flavors with the wine. The blend was aged in French oak barrels for 6 to 8 months, 40% new barrels and the rest in used barrels. We reviewed the 2009 vintage, and are doing the 2010 vintage mainly because Robert Parker gave the 2010 vintage 94 points, I am not big on wine points, but how often do you see an under $15 wine get 94 points? The alcohol content is 14%.

The color is a slightly watery cherry red with black cherry highlights. The nose is a complex mix of scents, extracted blueberry, cinnamon spice, candy bar chocolate, extremely ripe banana, red plums and matchstick heads, there is a lot going on here. There is a full, silky with an edge, mouthfeel. It starts rich blackberry mixed with plum and strawberry, followed by raisin spice, licorice, a very light touch of Port. The mid palate shows creme brulee with blueberries and a slight rough, chewy bite from the tannins. The acidity is well balanced and the finish is strong and long.

A good wine is a good wine no matter what the price or the points say, the 2009 Chateau Pesquie Terrasses was very good and the 2010 is even better. This wine is imported by Eric Solomon and here is a wine tip for you: when you are looking for wines from France, Spain or Italy, follow the importer. The best wine importers have a house style, if you find an imported wine that knocks you out, there is a very good chance that there are many other wines in their portfolio that will peak your interest.
