The Senda 66 Tempranillo is 100% Tempranillo sourced from a single vineyard near the town of Casas de Los Pinos in the La Mancha growing region of Spain. The wine is aged in new French oak barrels for 8 months then stored in the bottle for another 5 months before being released. Robert Parker gave the wine 90 points, he used to give inexpensive Australian wines 90 points on a regular basis, today its inexpensive Spanish wines that get the love. The alcohol content is 14%.
The color is intense dark purple. The nose is grape fruit roll-ups, blueberry jam, vanilla and a hint of smoke, the aromas jump out the glass. A medium bodied, smooth, fruit forward wine. It starts out with dark juicy black cherry, then some oak spice, tea and cedar plank. The mid-palate adds Sambuca and raspberry. The tannins are in the mix, but are smooth and sweet and the acidity is very well integrated into the body of the wine. The finish is both strong and long.
The Senda 66 is well rounded, ten buck wine, it does everything well, great color, interesting nose, eclectic flavors, well structured with a full featured finish. This tempranillo is not overly dry like some Rioja Temranillo’s can be. The Senda 66 has the flavor and structure to pair with all sorts of dishes, from tapas to BBQ ribs, but I think sharing a bottle or two with friends is the way to go.
