The 2008 Firesteed Oregon Pinot Noir is 100% Pinot Noir sourced from multiple vineyards located in Willamette, Rouge, Umpqua and Walla Walla Valleys, a decent cross section of Oregon Pinot Noir growing regions. The wine is fermented in stainless steel tanks and 20% of the Pinot Noir was aged in oak barrels, the rest aged in stainless steel vats. The alcohol content is 12.3%.
The color is a Robitussin red. The nose is raspberry, menthol, cold coffee and a touch of mushroom. This is a fruit forward Pinot Noir, strawberry and tart cherry, followed by herbal tea. The mid-palate brings black Twizzlers, hint of butterscotch and black pepper. The tannins are very soft and light and the acidity is evident, but balanced. The finish is red fruit and tea and while not particularly strong does stick around for a while.
Oregon Pinot tastes a little different from Sonoma Pinot, which tastes different from Santa Barbara Pinot and tastes different from Burgundy Pinot and on and on and on. The Firesteed is an inexpensive way to try a very approachable Oregon Pinot. You should be able to find it in the shops for somewhere between 10 to 15 bucks.
