The 2007 Vino Zaco is 100% Tempranillo made by Bodegas Bilbainas (one of the oldest wineries in Rioja) grown in Rioja, Spain. The wines of the Rioja DOC are classified by the aging process, so much time in the barrel and so much time in the bottle makes the wine a Crianza, Reserva or Gran Reserva. The Vino Zaco ignores the Rioja rules and regulations, the winemaker ages the wine for as long as he feels is right. The Tempranillo is aged in French and American oak barrels for an unspecified length of time. The alcohol content is 14%.
The color is a brownish red. The nose is cherry, blackberry, vanilla and a little oak spice. A flavorful, full bodied wine, cherry, raspberry with Altoids spice upfront. The mid-palate smooths things out with vanilla and strawberry. The tannins are strong and firm, but they are balanced and don’t bite. The finish is tart red fruit and is of good length.
The Vino Zaco is a full flavored, bold with a nice dose of spice, but balanced wine that should sell for under $15. Drinks really well on its own or would do well accompanying a steak. The Vino Zaco is a terrific taste of Rioja at a fair price.
