The 19 Crimes Revolutionary Red Limited Edition is a wine released near St. Pat’s Day, which I found selling for under $10. It looks like this wine was first released in March 2024, but this version has a different label, so it seems to be new and not a 2024 leftover. 19 Crimes is a very successful label from Treasury Wine Estates.

The Story

The name 19 Crimes refers to the 19 crimes that would get you sent from Great Britain to Australia in the early 1880s. There is a photo of a real historical person on each label and if you use your phone and follow instructions the label comes to life and tells you their story.

The green-colored 19 Crimes Revolutionary Red Limited Edition is honoring some Irish freedom fighters who broke out of jail and stole a ship.

There is not a great deal of information concerning this Red blend (non-vintage), a blend of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chardonnay. Blending White wine with Red wine is not that unusual in Australia. I asked a winemaker why add the Whire wine, and they said it “puts a shine on the wine.”

I found no 19 Crimes literature that reported the blend of this wine, the information I have come from 3rd parties.

So what makes the 19 Crimes Revolutionary Red Limited Edition a St. Pat’s wine other than the green label? This Red blend has flavors derived from toasting oak (barrels or other methods) that add chocolate, coffee, and caramel to the wine.

Those flavors are often found in barrel-aged Red wine, but they are also flavors found in Irish Stout or Ale. In particular, these are flavors found in a glass of Guinness. Which is pretty Irish.

The alcohol content is 13.5%.

The 19 Crimes Revolutionary Red Limited Edition Tasting Notes

The color is a raspberry jam red. The nose is a little smoky with red berries, toasted vanilla, mint, blackberry, herbs, and chocolate. The 19 Crimes Revolutionary Red Limited Edition is smooth with dark flavors.

This red Blend tastes like black cherry, toasted vanilla, a hint of mocha, and a splash of plum, thin chocolate, spice, and strawberry. I am not getting the Irish ale connection; the advertised flavors are there, but balanced and not very Guinness-like.

The Summary

  • The 19 Crimes Revolutionary Red Limited Edition does sip well, but do not expect a wine version of Stout.
  • The label is green, and it honors Irish revolutionaries, which is more than enough reason to pop the top on St.Pat’s Day!

Don’t tell anyone, but there is absolutely no correlation between the cost of wine and the quality of wine.
