The Josh Cellars Pinot Grigio 2021 is $11.99 (Target) from the negociant side of Joseph Carr Wines. Joseph Carr’s winery is located in Napa, a negociant (Josh Cellars) owns no winery and no vineyards. They lease winery space from existing wineries and buy grapes or juice from wineries.

Josh Cellars Pinot Grigio 2021

The bottle says this wine was blended and cellared by Josh Cellars, meaning they formed the various lots of grapes or juice together into the desired wine and aged the wine for a while. Blending is the art of wine. The vineyard is agriculture and fermentation is science, but blending is where the magic happens.

The Josh Cellars Pinot Grigio 2021 is sourced from several contracted vineyards thru-out California. This young wine is produced with simple techniques and is not meant to be cellared or aged. It is usually the best bet to buy the newest vintage though this wine will be good for several, but the fresher the better.

Pinot Grigio was virtually unknown in the US until Santa Margharita Pinot Grigio came around. There are over 300 White grapes in Italy and Pinot Grigio was just one of the bunch. That Pinot Grigio is from the Alto Adige region of Northern Italy in the foothills of the Alps.

The growing conditions there are very different from California and the Josh Cellars Pinot Grigio 2021. The California vineyards should be warmer and exhibit different soil types. Most California vineyards have Pacific Ocean influence, which you do not get in the Alps. So this should be a different wine from the Italian Pinot Grigio. The alcohol content is a low 12.5%.

The Josh Cellars Pinot Grigio 2021 Tasting Notes

The color is a pale almost clear golden yellow. The nose is melon, honey, peach, pear, grapefruit, and green apple. The Josh Cellars Pinot Grigio 2021 has a rounded, soft mouthfeel and a gentle mix of flavors.

This Pinot Grigio tastes like a stew of peach, honeydew melon, pear, and tart lime. The mid-palate brings sweet apples, dried pineapple, and nectarine. The acidity is well-balanced.

The Summary

  • The Josh Cellars Pinot Grigio 2021 is a crowd-pleaser wine. Very easy to drink with good flavor.
  • This Pinot Grigio may not rise to the level of the best Alto Adige wines, but it will put a smile on your face.
