The Zombie Zin is a non-vintage wine that is 95% Zinfandel and 5% Syrah sourced from vineyards in several locations in California. Zombie is a brand from Chateau Diana a family-owned and operated winery started in 1981 and is located in Sonoma.

Zombie Zin

Zombie Zin may be a brand that was produced to take advantage of the Walking Dead/Fear the Walking Dead craze. This makes sense since at the height of those shows’ popularity people held watch parties and a good Zombie show party needs a good Zombie wine.

The Zinfandel grapes mainly came from the California Delta which is Lodi and Clarksburg and the Syrah came from the Central Coast. Central Coast plus Lodi/Clarksburg equals California on the label. The Zombie Zin was fermented in Stainless steel tanks and aged in American oak barrels for 6 months.

This is a non-vintage wine and I do not the details of why that is so. Sometimes a blend will have some grapes that have been aged in oak for a good period mixed with non-oak-aged grapes, so grapes from different vintages are expected.

This leads us to the label, which is a punk rock zombie looking for some nightlife. Which makes this an excellent Halloween party wine. The suggested retail price is $13.50 and it should be on sale in October. The alcohol content is 14.5%.

The Zombie Zin Tasting Notes

The color is still see-thru scarlet red with black highlights. The nose is a stew of blackberry, raspberry, herbs, and spice. The Zombie Zin is both smooth and spicey, this is a dry wine with some interesting flavors.

This Zinfandel tastes like blackberry, black pepper, black licorice, a slap of spice, and plum. The mid-palate offers a rougher-edged spice, a little vanilla, blueberry, sour cherry, and herbs. The tannins are sweet and the acidity is well-managed.

The Summary

  • The Zombie Zin is more than simply a novelty wine. Buy it for the Zombie label and drink it because it is a pretty good value-priced ZInfandel.
