Bistrot Tropezien Cotes de Provence Rose’ 2013

2013_bistrot_tropezien_rose'The Bistrot Tropezien Cotes de Provence Rose’  is a blend of Cinsault, Grenache and a little Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from the Cotes de Provence AOP, the largest of the Provence (Southeast France) wine districts. The Cotes de Provence AOP produces 72.6% of all the wines from Provence and 89.5% of those wines are Rose’. Cinsault and Grenache are two of the traditional grapes used in Provence Rose’ and since more wines are being exported, the use of Cabernet Sauvignon has increased. This Rose’ is aged 6 months “on lees,” that indicates that the dead yeast and grape residue is left in the tank with the wine, this gives the wine added structure, texture and flavor. The alcohol content is 13%.

The color is pretty in pink. The nose is light and delicate, ripe red berries and a spring flower bouquet. These Provence Rose’ look like they will be sweet, but they are not, they crisp and clean, with excellent balanced acidity. The Bistrot Tropezien (yes, Saint-Tropez is near by) tastes of nectar sweet strawberry and cherry along with lemon and lime. The actual flavors are not the main show here, what is intriguing is the interplay between the sweet and the sour. The acidity provides a refreshing crispness and great length to the flavors and textures. The finish is subtle, but lengthy.

If you are interested in Rose’ wine, you have to try Provence Rose,’ most of these wineries have making Rose’ for generations, and it shows. The Bistrot Tropezien lists for $12.99 and most Provence wine makers have at least one bottle that sells for under $20. These are dry, intricate wines that really evoke the spirit of a cozy Bistro on a hill overlooking the ocean on the warm summer evening. How can you not like a wine that takes you to the south of France, at least for a little while?
