Skinnygirl Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

skinnygirlcabsauv2012The 2012 Skinnygirl Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from vineyards located in more than one California grape growing AVA. This Cabernet Sauvignon is part of Bethenny Frankel’s growing low-cal line of wines, pre-mixed drinks and spirits. The Skinnygirl Cabernet has 100 calories per 5 ounce serving and has a 10% alcohol content, a typical Cabernet Sauvignon has 123 calories/5 oz and a California Cab usually has about 13.5% alcohol. Alcohol contains sugar, so lower alcohol content helps lower the calorie count.

The color is a ripe plum red with an almost clear halo. The nose is red berries, newly mown lawn, dark chocolate and red Twizzlers. This is a lighter style of Cabernet Sauvignon, soft and smooth. It tastes of cherry, strawberry, plum, Nestle’s chocolate powder and a dash of tart cranberry. The mid palate adds a shot of French vanilla, a nutty, salty sensation and a late hit of cassis. The tannins are soft and out of the way, the acidity is buried in the mix, but does show itself on the finish and it allows the slightly tart finish to linger.

The 2012 Skinnygirl Cabernet Sauvignon isn’t a food wine, but since you are counting calories, you were probably only going to have a couple of rice cakes to counter all the wine you intend to drink. This is a soft, smooth Cabernet Sauvignon with most of the edges rounded off, not a ton of structure, but it holds its own in the flavor department. This wine is not aimed at the old school, Steakhouse Cabernet Sauvignon drinkers, but is intended for the”Lets have some fun, I’m thinking Red wine this time” drinkers, flavor over structure is probably the smart way to go. One sentence review : Napa Cabernet Sauvignon lovers, look elsewhere, casual wine drinkers, calorie counters and folks new to Red wine, drink up.

Don’t tell anyone, but there is absolutely no correlation between the cost of wine and the quality of wine.
