Honey Moon 2012 Viognier

honeymoonviognierI often wonder why Viognier isn’t more popular in the US. It stands well on its own and is often co-fermented with Syrah in the Rhone Valley in France, so it has solid credentials. It has the weight of the ever popular, Chardonnay, but with sooo much more going on.

So if you’ve never had one, this is a low risk one to try: I picked this up at Trader Joe’s for about $5. I was just looking for an easy drinking inexpensive white wine and that is exactly what this is. Straw in color with a slight greenish tint – it’s a 2012 so it’s very young and fresh – the aromas jump out of your glass. There are notes of mango, lime, peaches (classic for the variety), honeysuckle, sweet smelling flowers (also classic for the variety), and they translate to the palate. This was medium in body with medium acidity, and I mostly got mango, peaches, lemongrass, and honeysuckle with a huge amount of ripe orange on the finish.

I was seriously shocked by how good this wine was for the price. It’s definitely a great one for summer weather, good friends, picnics, and simply prepared food. I can see it pairing wonderfully with a crisp salad with citrus vinaigrette and grilled shrimp.
