2010 Valtea Albariño

1470_0The 2010 Valtea Albariño is 100% Albariño sourced from Estate vineyards, both estate property and rented vineyards in the Rias Baixas region of Western Spain. This wine is produced by Bodegas Vilarvin and their property is located less than one mile north of the Portuguese borderAlbariño is THE white grape of Rias Baixas and has been growing in this region since the 1100s. This Albariño is fermented in stainless steel vats, it sees no oak aging and the alcohol content is 12.5%.

The color is pale daisy yellow. The nose is honey and peaches, fresh and juicy with a late hit of sweet pear. This Albariño has a silky, syrupy mouthfeel, it feels like there is some weight to the wine, but the flavors are crisp and delicate. It tastes of a stew of peaches,pears and apricots with a light sensation of citrus. The wine is very dry upfront, but there is a whiff of sweet fruit on the finish. The finish is subtle, but does not go away.

The Valtea Albariño is a very attractive wine, it is both luscious and subtle. This is a wine that is custom made to paired with seafood dishes and to be enjoyed during the hot summer months. It is crisp, tasty and elegant and it is neither too heavy or too light. Albariño might not be on the White wine list of the Top Ten most popular grapes, but it should be. So, break out of your Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc rut and give Albariño a try.
