2008 Gloria Ferrer Carneros Pinot Noir

gloria-ferrer-pinot-noir-carneros-usa-10256443The 2008 Gloria Ferrer Carneros Pinot Noir is 100% Pinot Noir sourced from their Estate vineyards on the Sonoma side of the Carneros grape growing AVA. Gloria Ferrer is known for Champagne style Sparkling wines and the Pinot Noir grapes used for the Sparkling wines have different characteristics and are grown in a different section of their vineyards than the Pinot Noir grapes that go into their still wines. The wine was aged in French oak barrels for 9 months, 1/3 new barrels, the rest reused barrels. The wine was bottled “unfined,” “unfined” means they didn’t filter the wine before bottling, all the flavor (along with some grape residue) makes it into the bottle. This Estate grown and bottled Pinot (which received 91 points by Wine Enthusiast) sells online for between $12 and $19. The alcohol content is 13.9%.

The color is a dark ruby red. The nose is herbs, followed by cherries, plum, mushroom and a hint of Wrigley’s Spearmint gum. This is a big, but balanced Pinot Noir, it starts with tart cherry, raspberry, licorice and tea. The mid palate brings smooth creme brulee and a touch of dried herbs. The acidity is well balanced, giving this Pinot Noir some very nice length. No wimpy finish here, it is strong and lasts a long time.

The Gloria Ferrer Carneros Pinot Noir is a solid, extremely well priced, real Pinot Noir. I am fairly certain, that if the economy was better you would not be able to find this Pinot for under 20 bucks, and it’s a good Pinot at that price. The one good thing about this economy is that bargain wine drinkers never had it better.

Don’t tell anyone, but there is absolutely no correlation between the cost of wine and the quality of wine.
