2008 Maggio Family Vineyards Old Vine Zinfandel

160496The 2008 Maggio Family Vineyards Old Vine Zinfandel is sourced from Estate vineyards in the Lodi grape growing AVA of California’s Central Valley. Lodi is located between the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and the San Francisco Bay. The Maggio Vineyards have Zinfandel vines that are up to 120 years old, though I don’t know if any of those grapes found their way into this bottle. There is no legal definition defining just how old, Old Vines must be, but in Lodi ancient Zinfandel grapevines are plentiful. Maggio Family Vineyards is part of the Oak Ridge Winery group, which is the oldest operating winery in Lodi. The alcohol content is a subdued for a Zinfandel, 13%.

The color is black cherry red with a pale red halo. The nose is jammy blackberry, cocoa powder, plums and red Twizzlers. This wine is full bodied, but soft on the palate, rich and jammy upfront with some old school, rough and ready Zinfandel characteristics on the mid palate. It starts with strawberry and raspberry, combined with sweet licorice, along with a touch of herbal tea. The mid palate shows some stout, smooth tannins and both curry spice and Altoids spice, nothing too strong, but a nice counterbalance to the jammy fruit. There is a solid supply of acidity running through the body of the wine, that bodes well with pairing the Maggio Zin with food and also helps the finish keep rolling along.

The Maggio Family Vineyards Old Vine Zinfandel is a very solid, well priced (I found it for $9.99) Zinfandel. I like my Zinfandel to have some rough edges, if I want soft and smooth, I will grab a Merlot, and Maggio Zin gives me the rough edges while still keeping its balance. A real good Zinfandel for the money

Don’t tell anyone, but there is absolutely no correlation between the cost of wine and the quality of wine.
