2008 Alias Cabernet Sauvignon

68857The 2008 Alias Cabernet Sauvignon is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from more than one California grape growing AVA. If you see Napa (or any other growing area) on a wine label, that indicates at least 75% of the grapes came from Napa Valley, if only 74% of the grapes came from Napa, then the label has to say California instead of Napa. Alias is the project of 8 working (and unnamed) winemakers who thru their contacts with California vineyards, have long term grape contracts for good, but well priced grapes. All the grapes were grown with sustainable farming practices. The back label says Alias wine is about “affordable luxury”. Alias is part of a group that also makes Cannonball Cabernet Sauvignon. The alcohol content is 13.8%.

The color is ruby red. The nose is red fruit, cherry and strawberry, followed Nestle Quik powder and a slight earthy scent. This is a medium bodied wine, with a bit more structure than you usually see in this price range (I found it for $7.99). Fresh, not jammy, blueberry upfront followed by a slap of creamy milk chocolate and tart cherry. The mid palate adds pomegranate and vanilla pudding. The tannins are on the stiff side, but are generally balanced. The acidity is well balanced, but shows itself with a little fizzy sensation at the finish, which gives the light finish enough oomph to linger around for a while.

The Alias Cabernet Sauvignon is a pretty good 8 buck Cab, creamy with good fruit flavors, has a nice structure and it hasn’t been neutered, it still has the tannins and acidity a Cabernet Sauvignon should have.

Don’t tell anyone, but there is absolutely no correlation between the cost of wine and the quality of wine.
