Rosenblum Vintner’s Cuvee XXXIII Zinfandel

rosenblum_zinThe Rosenblum Vintner’s Cuvee Zinfandel is a non-vintage blend of  88% Zinfandel and 12% Petite Sirah sourced from vineyards in multiple California Zinfandel growing areas (though the bulk of the grapes came from Lodi). Rosenblum has been producing Zinfandel wines for 33 years, hence the roman numerals. This bottle is composed of Zinfandel grapes from more than one vintage, which allows Rosenblum to make a wine that conforms to the house style regardless of variations in each vintage. The wine was aged in American oak barrels for 8 months and the alcohol content is 14.5%.

The color is a clear, shiny strawberry red. The nose is blackberry, coffee, plum and coffee creamer. The fruit is ripe and juicy, cherry and raspberry upfront, then vanilla and a light touch of curry spice. The mid palate shows blueberry, pepper and of all things lemon. The tannins are fairly light for a Zinfandel, this is more of a smooth Zin than a rough and ready Zinfandel. The finish is full bodied and lasts pretty long for an under 10 buck wine.

There is a trend lately for winemakers to produce “elegant” Zinfandel, I think its just an excuse to get people to pay $35 for a bottle of Zinfandel. I like the old fashioned, plush and juicy, rough and ready, wine of the people Zinfandel. If ever there was a grape that does not have to be “fancy” to rock, its Zin. Any wine that pairs perfectly with the best BBQ ribs in town is ok with me.

Don’t tell anyone, but there is absolutely no correlation between the cost of wine and the quality of wine.

I was given a bottle of this wine and loved it! Do you know wher eit can be purchased in the South Bay area of Southern California? Specifically, zip code 90266 (Manhattan beach).

    Thank you.
