The 2009 Dreaming Tree Crush Red Blend is a part of a project between Dave Matthews (of the Dave Matthews Band) and Simi Winery Winemaker Steve Reeder. Dave Matthews is not new to wine, he founded Blenheim Vineyards, located near Charlottesville, Va., in 2000. The Crush Red Blend is 67% Merlot and 33% Zinfandel sourced from the North Coast AVA in California. The North Coast AVA includes Sonoma, Napa and Mendocino along with 39 other AVA’s. The blend is aged in oak barrels for 19 months and the alcohol content is 13.5%.
The color is reddish purple with a pale pink halo. The nose is jammy blueberry, cold coffee, french vanilla and smoke from the BBQ grill. It starts out smooth and juicy, rich raspberry, dark chocolate and creamy vanilla. The blend transitions to tart blackberry, a touch of spice and herbal tea. The tannins are strong but smooth and the acidity is nicely balanced. The finish is full and lingers for a decent amount of time.
The Dreaming Tree Crush Red Blend is a solid, good tasting, well made, reasonably priced ($13 at the local shop) wine. It drinks very well on its own and would pair well with grilled meats, BBQ or bacon burgers.

I like it. It’s reminiscent of Washington state wines with heavy finish and berry sensibility. Go, Dave!
