2009 Beso de Vino Old Vine Garnacha

79646The 2009 Beso de Vino Old Vine Garnacha is sourced from 40 year old vines grown near the village of Aguaron in the Carinena D.O., in northeastern Spain. The grapes are hand picked and the Garnacha is aged in new French oak barrels. Wine has been produced in the Carinena region since at least the 3rd century BC. This is a bottle that should be available for about $10 and it received 89 points from Wine Spectator (says so on the bottle). The alcohol content is 13.5%.

The color is cherry jelly red, dark but not opaque. The nose is raspberry, red Twizzlers, a yeasty bread dough aroma and roses. It tastes of raspberry, strawberry with licorice and tea. The mid-palate adds blackberry and curry spice. This Garnacha is smooth and silky, but with an appealing rough edge. The tannins are soft and well integrated and the finish fades quickly, though it does linger for a while.

The Beso de Vino Old Vine Garnacha is an extremely solid ten buck bottle of wine, it does everything you would want out of a Garnacha from Carinena. One thing unusual about the bottle cap (it is a screw-top), there are 3 small holes in a triangle pattern on the cap top and a semi-permeable seal under the cap. A cork allows a tiny amount of air to enter the bottle, a screw-top keeps all air out. This screw-top mimics a cork by letting a slight amount of air into the bottle. Also, that is not a cow on the label, it is a bull, and those are not udders.

Don’t tell anyone, but there is absolutely no correlation between the cost of wine and the quality of wine.
